The theme of journey can be shown in a diversity of ways, using several techniques. For example, in the first and third image, the technique of motion blur has been used in order to show fast movement by transport, which highlights the whole idea of going on a journey. The technique of motion blur also brings out the elements of colour in images, by blurring all the colours in one image, it adds different shades and tones to the image.
In the images above, journey is shown through connotations. For example, in the second image, the subject is holding a suitcase but is standing right in front of a pile of luggages. This suggests that she has picked that particular suitcase, implying that each suitcase represents a different journey. Moreover, the third image shows connotations of danger and adventure, the viewer's view is restricted as they cannot see beyond the bridge, which gives them feelings of adventure and mystery, emphasising the theme of journey.
The images above show journey through scenery and highlight a specific individuals apart from the first image, which shows journey through childhood and showing the difference in the scenery. It is an emotional picture as the viewer automatically guesses that the person holding the image is one from the old photograph. This connects the viewer to the subjects and allows them to focus on the change in scenery, highlighting the idea of journey.
The technique of depth of field is used quite a lot in journey photography. This is because it exaggerates a scene and make it look bigger and longer as a journey, especially pathways. The first and third images have used this technique but the third image has blurred out most of the picture. This is to evoke feelings of curiosity in the viewer, making them wonder there this path is and what it leads to, forcing them to focus on the image even more.
The second and third images have been edited in such a way that the subjects stand out. For example, in the second picture. the scenery has been slightly blurred so that the viewer can concentrate solely on the little children more than what their surroundings are. Furthermore, the photographer has framed the picture to further ensure this; the children are in the middle of the image, wearing bright clothing, which contrast with the green trees around them. This automatically grabs the viewer's attention and ensures they look at the subjects as soon as they lay eyes on the photograph.
Some photographers focus on different cultures and traditions in order to portray the theme of journey. An example is from the second image, with the girl carrying a baby on her back. The girl looks too young to be the mother of the child, which suggest she is the sister of the baby. The viewer is forced to pay attention to this as the background is blurry, preventing them to see what is going on. By focusing on the subjects, they are exploring another culture and are learning about their traditions, in this case, young babies being left in the care of young siblings. This highlights the theme of journey by giving the viewer an idea of different cultures around the world.
The second and third image both use depth of field to show the theme of journey. However, the third image has the background blurred so the depth of field is not as clear. Moreover, the image has been edited on Photoshop, creating another image on the suitcase, but it has been down in such a way that it looks as if the image is just a design on the suitcase. This has been done to engage the viewer with the photograph as they have to look in deeper to notice the image on the suitcase.
Objects can also be used to illustrate the theme of journey. In the first image, the passport shows connotations of some sort of journey and lets the viewer know that the photographer is planning to go on his travels. The third image shows the technique of motion blur, which restricts the viewer's view and renders the object unclear, but this creates a mysterious atmosphere and excites the viewers.
In most photography, the element of contrast is used in order to make a specific subject or object stand out. In journey photography, this can be a great technique and can be shown through colour, tone or even symbolism. In the second image, the bright yellow shirt that the subject is wearing forces him to stand out from the rest of the scene, which is quite bright. By doing this, the photographer creates a distinction between the focus of the picture and the surroundings, highlighting the theme of journey.
The last three images all consist of straight angles focusing only on the action. This provides the viewer with a perfect view and enables them to pay their full attention on what the photographer wants them to.
